The cultural diversity of the tribes of Sumatra/people of Sumatra is as unique and diverse as its plant and animal life. The island of Sumatra and Borneo together have a total population of over 60 million people together…all of which are indigenous people and immigrants from other islands in Indonesia (as well as other Asian countries) that dominate the land. Sumatra itself is home to 50 million people and is the 4th most populous island in the world. However, these beautiful cultured tribes have been disturbed by the rapid economic changes that have, due to their amount of destruction, brought shifts in population and threaten the way of life for communities who have traditionally lived off the forest all their life.
Sumatra’s vast wealth of natural resources has attracted a lot of different countries from all over the world. The natural resources range from precious hardwoods and minerals to palm oil, rubber and coal. This is okay if they utilize the resources well and keep the agriculture untouched and unharmed, but this is the complete opposite to what the TNC’s and other companies have to offer. They are cutting down the rainforest for different reasons by using slash-and-burn techniques; this one will scar the rainforest forever, chainsaws, the monster destructors and many other repulsive methods.
The land that is lost due to deforestation and later on used for palm oil plantation projects and coffee industries, was once used by indigenous tribes to farm, make crops (not only for them but for us also) and for them to hold their cultural activities. However, the “development” of Sumatran rainforests has stopped them from doing this. It is beginning to ruin their lives…
